2018 Peer Advisory Team (PAT) Members

As current UMBC-Shady Grove students, members of the UMBC Peer Advisory Team (PAT) serve as a critical point of contact in the successful and seamless transition of students transferring to UMBC-Shady Grove from other institutions.

Robert Asante: Psychology

Has been a member of the Achieving Collegiate and Excellence and Success (ACES) Program since 2013 and hopes to earn his PhD in the future.  His best piece of advice for students: “Get involved!”


Maria Bruno: Social Work

Believes in the power of faith and never giving up!  She plans to earn her Master of Social Work (MSW) following graduation from UMBC and hopes to open up her own holistic wellness and healing center in the future.  Maria serves as the President of the Social Work Student Association (SWSA).


Kathleen Cene: Psychology

Works as a social media specialist for the The Women Empowerment Project and hopes to eventually serve as a school guidance counselor in her future.  She reminds students: “Do not be afraid to ask for help!”


Sandy Cockrell: Social Work

Sandra completed her social work field placement at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility – ask her about her experiences. Next step – earning her Master of Social Work (MSW)! She values the accessibility and small class sizes at UMBC-Shady Grove.


Fatima Conteh: Social Work

Wanted to be a lawyer growing up, but social work ended up “calling her name!”  Fatima is a member of both UMBC’s Peer Advisory Team and USG’s Student Ambassadors.  She encourages students to “utilize all the wonderful and unique resources UMBC-Shady Grove has to offer!”


Valeria Erazo: Psychology

Valeria is full of UMBC Retriever pride! Following completion of her undergraduate degree, Valeria plans to continue graduate studies at UMBC-Shady Grove by pursuing the Master of Professional Studies in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. 


Bahareh Farahifar: Psychology

Bahareh’s fun fact?  She practiced ballet for 9 years! She is a member of the Tau Sigma Honor Society and enjoys participating in Yoga at the USG Rec Center.  In the future, Bahareh hopes to earn her master’s degree and pursue teaching.


Christian Freolo: Psychology

Loves camping and being outdoors!  Christian is a member of USG’s Rock Climbing Club and appreciates being active.  In the future, he hopes to apply his psychology background toward a Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree.  Go Christian!


Shireen Golchin: Psychology

Shireen transferred to UMBC-Shady Grove from University of Maryland College Park and loves the welcoming environment at USG! She is a member of UMBC-Shady Grove’s Psychology Student Association (PSA) and encourages students to make as many connections as possible.


Isabella Hlavacek: History

Is an avid concert-goer -- ask her about her favorite artists! Isabella is the copy editor for UMBC-Shady Grove’s History Student Journal and is a member of the History Student Association (HSA).  Her piece of advice for students?  Don’t forget to “have fun!”


Joann Manugh-Khaloyan: Political Science

Joann is trilingual!  She attends political science “Wednesday Wipeout” current affairs discussions when she is able and hopes, in the future, to attend law school.  Cool fact?  Her sister is also an alumna of UMBC-Shady Grove!


Harrison Meyers: History

Is passionate about baseball and serves as President of the Rockville Baseball Association!  Harrison choose UMBC-Shady Grove because of its family-like feel and the fact that he doesn’t feel “like he gets lost in the crowd.”  He is a member of both the History Student Association (HSA) and the Political Science Student Association (PSSO).


James Mitchell: History

James loves studying history and working with youth!  In the future he hopes to earn his Master of Education degree and teach at the high school level.


Mark Schulze: Social Work

Plays the guitar and piano!  Mark eventually hopes to earn his Master of Social Work degree.  His advice for prospective students?  Get involved in meaningful experiences!


Julia Zathang: Psychology

Julia likes to stay active -- she is involved with UMBC-Shady Grove’s Psychology Student Association and with Psi Chi and Sigma Alpha Lambda at UMBC’s main campus! She plans to pursue a Master’s in Professional Studies in Industrial/Organizational Psychology after graduation.
